The Reserve Bank of Australia’s October 2026 Financial Stability Review offers a measured but important message for households weighing up personal loans: most borrowers remain resilient, yet pressure on budgets has not disappeared.
The review, prepared using data available to 25 September 2026, points to higher inflation and interest rates as key reasons real household disposable income slipped slightly in the first half of the year.

For personal loan borrowers, the main lesson is that system-wide resilience does not remove the need for careful planning at the household level. The RBA noted that financial pressure has increased for some borrowers, particularly lower-income households, even though the estimated share of variable-rate owner-occupier borrowers facing a cash flow shortfall remained relatively low at around 2 per cent. Formal hardship arrangements have also increased, but remain low overall.

That distinction matters. A stable financial system can coexist with individual households feeling stretched by rent, groceries, fuel, insurance, existing credit commitments or irregular income. A borrower considering debt consolidation, a car loan or an unsecured personal loan may still face lender scrutiny of income, expenses, current debts and repayment capacity, even when arrears across the broader market remain contained.

The review also reinforces why lenders are likely to keep focusing on prudent lending standards. The RBA said household arrears remain around pre-pandemic levels despite a recent lift, while banks remain well capitalised and lending standards have generally stayed sound. In practical terms, borrowers should not assume that a resilient banking sector automatically means easier approval, lower rates or larger loan amounts.

Useful questions for consumers to consider generally include:

  • whether the repayment would still be manageable if essential costs rose;
  • whether the loan term lowers monthly repayments but increases total interest over time;
  • whether upfront, ongoing or early repayment fees change the true cost;
  • whether existing credit cards, buy now pay later balances or other loans reduce borrowing capacity; and
  • whether a buffer is available for illness, reduced work hours or unexpected bills.

For readers comparing scenarios, a personal loan repayment calculator can be a useful educational tool, provided the results are treated as estimates rather than quotes, approvals or personalised recommendations. It can help show how the same loan amount may look different when the rate, term or repayment frequency changes.

The RBA’s findings are not a warning that all borrowers are in trouble, nor are they a green light to take on extra debt. They are a reminder that affordability is personal. Understanding responsible lending checks, reading loan terms carefully and allowing room for uncertainty remain central to sound borrowing decisions in the current environment.
